Generic medicine day

There is a common perception that quality is synonymous with a high price: be it clothes, education or even healthcare. To counter this, Janaushadhi Diwas or Generic Medicine Day is celebrated each year on March 7th to spread awareness about the usage and benefits of generic medicines.

The main aim is to ensure access to quality medicines for all, especially the poor and deprived sections of society. Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP) is a noble ambition of the Indian Department of Pharmaceuticals which is now making a great influence on the masses in its endeavour to deliver quality medicines at an affordable price. Under this, more than 800 stores have been set up, covering all national districts to ensure easy access to affordable medicine to the people in every nook and corner of the country.

In these Janaushadhi Kendras, all pharmaceutical drugs, surgical instruments and products like sanitary napkins, protein powder and supplements are made available. Frequent health checkup camps are set up across the country. These camps include blood pressure checkups, blood glucose tests, free doctor consultations, and free medicine distribution.

This day was first commemorated in 2019, making it the fifth celebration this year. The theme for last year was "Jan Aushadhi-Jan Upyogi”. Various events are held in close coordination with beneficiaries, state/UT officials, public representatives, doctors, health workers, nurses, pharmacists, Jan Aushadhi Mitra and other stakeholders to bring easy accessibility and affordability in terms of medicines. Last year sky lanterns and balloons were released at 75 locations across the country to spread the message of the Jan Aushadhi.

Generic medicines are made available to the public at a nominal cost that is below the market price. Since there is a huge drop in their price, it leads to better savings. It has been reported that sales in the financial year 2020-21 led to total savings of approximately Rs 3,700 Crore for ordinary citizens as the medicines are much cheaper by 50 percent to 90 percent than the market prices.
