A Beach Likes To Play Hide And Seek

Globally known as the ‘Vanishing Sea’, Chandipur Beach in Orissa, seems to be under the spell of a magician. Sometimes it’s there and sometimes it’s not. It depends on what time you come to visit the beach.

Who is this magician? It’s none other than our green abode; Nature. There’s nothing jaw-dropping and splendid as the natural phenomenon. Around 200 km away from Bhubaneswar is Chandipur Beach of golden grains of sand and lush vegetation. A wide variety of flora and fauna can be found here, including horseshoe crabs and red crabs.

Apart from the beauty such a strange phenomenon occurs here every day, which is nowhere else to be seen around the globe. During low tide, the sea water recedes up to 5 kilometres twice a day, leaving behind shells and their remains. And it comes back during the high tide to fill the void.

There is no fixed time to when this phenomenon takes place, it solely depends upon the cycle of the moon. Locals of the area have accustomed themselves to the timings of the low and high tides. Though the waves of the beach are calm and gentle, during the full moon and new moon day, people are asked not to come near the beach area because of the extremely high tide.

Moreover, near the beach is a space to test ballistic missiles by DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organization) Integrated Research Range.

It is a thrilling experience to walk on the sea bed and if looked at from a distance it seems like one is walking over the water. Some locals enhance their experience by taking bikes into the sea bed. The best time to visit this place and enjoy the beauty, especially at sunset and sunrise is during the winter, between November and March.

The closest town to Chandipur beach is Balasore at a distance of 10 Km. The journey from the town to the beach is enormously pleasing to the eyes and the mind as the road is filled with natural beauty.

The place is a must-visit as you will be capturing the beauty of the ‘Hide and Seek’ beach through your own perception. And that’s the beauty of discovery!
