A new age of Television
We live in the golden age of tv, where web series and tv shows are directly broadcast on OTT Platforms. The scale of these shows are bigger than ever, the stories are fresh, the cast is brimming with talent, and the seasons are binge-worthy.
In a lockdown, binging season after season of popular tv shows became the favourite pastime of many. However, if you are bored with your usual picks and want to explore something new and exciting. This list is for you. Here are my picks of shows you should try this new year.
There she goes
This heartwarming British comedy-drama follows the Yates family and their 10-year-old daughter Rosie, who suffers from a learning disability. The creator of the show Shaun Pye, based the series on his own personal experience with his daughter, who was born with a chromosomal disorder. The show focus on the struggles of Rosie and her parents Emily and Simon, as they come to terms with their daughter’s disability and deal with the challenges that come along with it, together as a family. The narrative jumps back between the present and past with flashbacks to Rosie’s childhood, when her parents first discover her disability. The show has a 91% rotten tomatoes rating and was nominated for an International Emmy in 2021.
Ted Lasso
The idea of Ted Lasso first came from several sketches Jason Sudekis did for NBC sports coverage. Sudekis stars as the titular character Ted Lasso, an American football coach hired to coach a British soccer team. With an endearing story, great plot and well-written characters, it is impossible to not binge watch Ted Lasso. The show has gained critical acclaim for its upbeat tone and is one of the most honest portrayals of anxiety on screen. The show has a rotten tomato rating of 94% and won the Emmy Award for best comedy series in 2021.
Tehran
This Israeli spy thriller follows a female Mossad operative as she infiltrates Iran to stop a sinister scheme in motion. However, when her plans go awry, she gets trapped in the same place she once infiltrated. Tehran beautifully portrays the struggle for identity in the middle east, and the twist and turns keep coming. With a plot that’s shaded in grey, there are hardly any good or bad guys in Tehran. The story is full of suspense and keeps the audience guessing from start to finish. The show has a 94% rotten tomatoes rating and won the International Emmy for the best drama series in 2021.
The Crown
This historical drama shot to success with its first season, and there on onwards, every season has been better than the last. The show follows the reign of Queen Elizabeth II from the 1940s to the 1990s so far. With every season introducing historical characters and plot points. From the Suez crisis to the marriage of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer. This show is a must-watch for anyone interested in history, especially because of its impeccable writing, historically accurate aesthetic, and royal grandeur. The series will finally end with its 6th season, which will show the reign of Queen Elizabeth II in the 20-21st century. The show has a rotten tomato rating of 90% and won the Emmy for the Best Drama series in 2021.
El Presiden

The show focus on the rise of power-hungry Sergio Juade in the world of football, from the president of a Chilean football club to an authority figure in CONMEBOL. Even though the show is a dramatised version of the events that unfolded into the 2015 FIFA scandal. It closely follows the actual events.
