Bhongir Fort
Located in the heart of Bhongir, Telangana, Bhongir Fort has been a strategic target for invaders due to its location. Despite numerous attacks, the fort has stood the test of time, serving as a testament to the strength and resilience of the town's inhabitants.
The Bhongir Fort is situated in the heart of Telangana's Bhongir. Positioned atop a solitary hill resembling a large stone egg, the fort's sheer size of over 500 feet tall and covering 40 acres made it nearly impenetrable, attracting invaders to attempt sieges over the years.
Its strategic location provides breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The fort's surroundings are lined with shops and dwellings that provide a glimpse into the everyday life of the Goud people, from food to clothing, while a statue of their leader, Sardar Sarvai Panappa, stands at the hill's bottom. The statue is a reminder of the proud leader and his dedication to protecting the people of the area.
The fort is an example of how ancient monarchs ensured that they could not be surprised by adversaries. The fort endured sieges by foreign troops but lost strategic relevance by the 15th century with the invention of gunpowder. The Bahamani Sultans attempted to make the fort an Islamic structure and used it as a residence for the local governor and a jail for Qutub Shahi throne aspirants. Over time, it slowly fell into disrepair and became a quiet ruin, with its history slowly fading away.
The fort's entrance is guarded by a massive gate that reveals a panoramic view of the surrounding road and fort. A stone stairway leads to the first gate, surrounded by thick green vegetation, which provides a sense of an ancient ruin nestled in the forest.
Beyond the first gate, a difficult climb leads to the second gate, after which the stone stairs disappear, and a courtyard-like building emerges. The walls and moat of the building were designed to keep out the invaders.
As the ascent progresses, the iron railing on the steps acts as a shoulder to rest on. The main structure's remains appear at the summit, offering a peaceful sight and a moment of respite after the challenging climb. A small platform on the right has an antique cannon lying on the ground. The main structure is built on a square platform with a network of subterranean passageways. The fort's peaceful ambience and picturesque view become a craving when one returns to the hustle and bustle of the city.
