Biden In, Trump Out.
The erratic presidentship of Donald Trump came to an end this year. During his tenure, he became famous for his outrageous statements and tweets. While he was criticised by many, he also happened to garner large followership of his own, and this year when the results of the presidential elections came, Trumps erratic and irresponsible behaviour led to one of the darkest days of democracy.
Finally, on January 20th, Joe Biden was sworn in as the 46th President of the United States in a ceremony that took place in Capitol Hill amidst tight security. The Trump era in America officially came to an end. With his swearing-in, Joe Biden became the country's oldest President. Kamala Harris was sworn in as Vice President, and she became the first black Asian-American woman to occupy this post in the United States. The event was attended by former US Presidents George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama. Trump, however, wasn't present at the event.
The rioters descended on the Capitol after Trump told them at a rally outside the White House that they should march on the Capitol to protest the election results. The resulting chaos left the Capitol vandalised, and the photos that surfaced looked like a scene of a dystopian film.
Authorities reported that hundreds of others were hurt in addition to the five deaths, including more than 50 police officers. The White House conveyed its condolences for the fatalities and injuries on Thursday.
However, Trump did not denounce the violence and continued to pretend that he had won the election even though he had not. Trump also expressed sympathy and flattery for the rioters, ignoring overwhelming demands to condemn the violence. Twitter eventually took that tweet down, and his account was locked.
Ever since the beginning of his campaign, Trump and his supporters have been confident about his return to the White House. However, at the same time, Trump had met with criticism both in the US and outside America for his inappropriate statements and for misleading the citizens of his country; he was also facing a strong Democrat opponent in Joe Biden.
Once the counting for votes began, it soon became clear that Trump's days in the White House were numbered. In mid-November, all major news outlets predicted Biden's victory, which was confirmed by the Electoral College votes in mid-December. Biden was projected to win, and Trump's era was soon coming to an end,
Trump, who had previously stated that he would never yield to Biden, filed scores of unsuccessful lawsuits and bombarded his Twitter with bogus voter fraud accusations.
The Republican President has erroneously claimed that his re-election was stolen through major vote fraud, claiming that he won in a "landslide."
His refusal to recognise the election results culminated in a fatal riot, when crowds of his followers stormed the United States Capitol and disrupted legislative processes intended to count electors' votes and certify Biden's victory in the Nov. 3rd election.
