Devanahalli Fort, The birthplace of Legend Tipu Sultan
The numerous forts in India stand with honour, ready to recite their long history. One such fort is the Devanahalli Fort, which has witnessed extensive battles and the victories of royal families. Once a thriving place, which is popular as the birthplace of the great ruler Tipu Sultan, is now in shambles. So let's shed some light on the rich history of the ruined fort.
Located 35 km north of Bangalore, the fort screams of its glorious past. The fort sprawls over an area of 20 acres with its historical relevance and archaeological brilliance. Today, a number of tourists are attracted to this destination. The vast area provides enough space for tourists to explore its past. For any historophile, this place is a perfect date.

The beginnings can be traced back to the 15th century. During the reign of the Saluva Dynasty, the fort was built by the Mallebyre Gowda. However, the Dalwai of Mysore, Nanjarajah, conquered it in 1749. Later, it was again conquered by Hyder Ali and was finally ruled by Tipu Sultan.

Even in the present day, one of the main attractions of the fort is the residences of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan. Tipu Sultan was born in Devanahalli in 1751, and so this place is already famous as his birthplace. A memorial, which is a small pillared enclosure, is erected 150m southwest of the fort. It is a square-topped pillar enclosed with a stone tablet, which declares the legendary birth of Tipu. The region surrounded by the enclosure is known as Khas Bagh, where the greenery of banana, tamarind, and mango trees captivates people.

The fort would welcome you with its small yet elegantly carved designs. The amazing plasterwork is proof that it is full of excellent artwork. The architecture perfectly shows the defensive tactics that were used by the monarchs back then.

The fort has breathtaking designs that would fascinate you. It has smaller compartments, more precisely the hiding areas, that were used during times of emergency. The tiny opening from the forts is the way to mesmerizing panoramic views of the landscape that can put you in awe.

Along with these exceptional designs and skilful constructions, the fort has beautiful temples located inside. The oldest and best-built of several temples inside the fort's walls, Venugopalaswamy is home to a number of beautiful idols of regional deities. The Siddheshwar Swamy Temple, Raghavendra Swamy Mutt, and Chandramouleshwara Temple are some of the other spiritual attractions. Despite being damaged and decaying, the fort has retained some of the grandeur and splendour of earlier eras. Although a majority of the walls were defaced with graffiti and in terrible condition, they would never let you feel unwelcome.

Today, the fort is home to many families and is a picnic spot for many tourists. People visit the place to witness the town sprouting inside the fort. Although very little of the fort remains now, the aura and ambience are just apt for exploring its past.
