Our Lady of Angel’s Church, also known as Église de Notre Dame des Anges in French, is a magnificent church located in the charming city of Pondicherry, in the Indian Union Territory of Puducherry. The church stands as a prime example of French architecture and serves as a testament to the enduring French colonial influence in the region. With its remarkable beauty and well-preserved condition, it attracts visitors from all around the world.

The history of Our Lady of Angel’s Church can be traced back to the 17th century when the French East India Company established a trading post in Pondicherry. The church itself was constructed in 1855 and is situated on Rue Dumas Street, right in the heart of the French Quarter of Pondicherry, earning it the name Dumas Church. Designed in the Greco-Roman style, it was commissioned by Napoleon III in 1855 and entrusted to the architect Louis Guerre.

As the fourth oldest church in Pondicherry, it holds the distinction of being the only one to offer Mass in three languages - French, English, and Hindi. Following the Roman Catholic tradition, the church conducts hourly prayers and daily services. Facing the Bay of Bengal, it stands as a prominent landmark in Pondicherry. Originally, the chapel was painted in white both inside and outside, earning it the name White Chapel.

Within the church, a famous statue of Joan of Arc stands in a beautiful garden, clad in her armour. The statue was generously donated to the church by the former Mayor. The chapel bells, procured from France, feature a complex mechanism with pulleys and ropes connected to a downstairs rope.

Beyond its religious significance, Our Lady of Angel’s Church is a popular tourist attraction in Pondicherry. The church is surrounded by a serene and picturesque garden, providing a tranquil setting for visitors to relax and unwind. Moreover, it enjoys a strategic location near other prominent tourist spots in the city, including Promenade Beach and Aurobindo Ashram.

The church boasts stunning exteriors, with the front facade divided into three bays at the lower level, each featuring three openings. Twin-fluted Ionic pilasters support an entablature and a triangular pediment. The towers comprise two levels with a rooftop terrace. The first level boasts twenty-four niches housing statues of the twelve apostles and twelve urns in an alternating pattern. The second level showcases round-arched windows.

Over the years, the church has undergone several renovations to preserve its architectural beauty and historical significance. In 2005, a grand celebration marked the church's 150th anniversary, with various events organized to commemorate the occasion.

Our Lady of Angel’s Church stands as a remarkable structure that has withstood the test of time and continues to be a cherished landmark in Pondicherry. Its architectural splendour, religious importance, and cultural heritage place it among the exemplary architectural gems of the country.

Stepping inside, visitors are captivated by the awe-inspiring interiors. The main entrance leads to a narthex, while a barrel-vaulted roof adorns the nave and transept arms. The aisles are covered by a groined vault pattern with transverse ribs. Illuminating the space are eight latticed glass windows, allowing a soft glow of light to permeate through the dome, which sits on pendentives. The pillars that once housed clocks, singing Ave Maria every two hours, now stand as a testament to the church's rich history. The altar, originally graced by a statue of Our Lady of Angels, is now adorned with a holy cross.
