The king of Ujjaain named Chandrasena was a great devotee of Shiva.

One time he was performing his daily prayers to the god whena young boy called Shrikhar heard him. Shrikhar too was a Shiva devotee and wished to pray along with the king.

He tried to enter the king's palace but was stopped by the guards at the gate itself and sent away to the outskirts of the city by them.

There he overheard a plot of the two enemy kingdoms to attack Ujjain.

He at once, began praying to Shiva to save his city. A local priest named Vridhi, who was passing by, heard his prayers, and in turn he too began praying to the god.

Meanwhile, the enemy kings had attacked Ujjain and were almost successful but failed eventually!

But how was that? The god, Shiva himself, on hearing the prayers of his two devotees came down in the form of Mahakal to save Ujjain.

The villagers were very happy and requested the god to stay at the city. And so, Shiva took the form of a linga and the temple became famous as Mahakaleshwar Temple.
