Legend of Jagannath Temple (Part 02)

Story Summary

राजा के प्रवेश करते ही विष्णु द्वारा अधूरे देवताओं को छोड़ दिए गए

The King reached the seashore and found the fragrant tree. Just then Narada appeared and advised the king to make three deities out of it - those of Krishna, Balarama, and Subhadra, and place them in a pavilion.

The architect of the devas, Vishwakarma, appeared in the form of an artisan to create the images of Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra from the tree. He also built a magnificent temple to house the deities.

Interestingly, the god Vishnu himself appeared to help out in the work, but under the guise of a carpenter. But he had one condition though - that that he be left undisturbed until he finished the work on the deities. And so the work began.

However, after two weeks, the queen became anxious as they could not hear any sounds coming from the temple. She feared that the frail, old carpenter might be dead and so requested the king to open the door, thereby breaking the condition put forth by the carpenter.

Due to this, Vishnu then abandoned his work and immediately left, leaving the deities unfinished. The deities were without any hands, but a celestial divine voice instructed Indradyumana to install them in the temple.

And that is how the Jagannath Temple at Puri, Orissa came to be.
