Mysterious Ghost Built Kakanmath Temple

The story of the Kakanmath Temple begins in the 11th century in the town of Sihoniya, Madhya Pradesh which was once the capital of the Kushwahas. In the small town of Sihoniya, Her Majesty Kakanwati reigned; She was a devoted follower of Lord Shiva and had a strong desire to build a grand temple in his honor. Her wish was granted by the Kushwahas ruler Kirtiraj, who commissioned the construction of the Kakanmath Temple in 1015 AD. A temple that would be a marvel of design and architecture, similar to the temples at Khajuraho, with a pyramid-like structure over 150 feet in height.

As a tribute to the queen Kakanwati who had envisioned it, the King named the temple as Kakanmath Temple, a symbol of unwavering devotion and grandeur of ancient India.The temple's design and architecture which are similar to the temples at Khajuraho have made it a subject of study for scholars of Indian history and culture.

At over 150 feet in height, The Kakanmath Temple resembles a pyramid structure, with its stones carefully placed one on top of the other, and a pillared corridor leading to a central shrine, originally encircled by subsidiary shrines. The temple's exterior walls are adorned with beautiful statues depicting dancing, joyful figures and various Hindu Gods and Goddesses, as well as scenes from Hindu mythology.

However, the temple has faced its fair share of tragedies throughout its history. The temple was destroyed by the armies of Aibak and Iltutmish of the Delhi Sultanate in the 13th century and fell into neglect and obscurity. It wasn't until the 20th century that the temple was reclaimed as Indian heritage and it remains under the supervision of the Archaeological Survey of India, Gwalior Region.

Despite its dilapidated state, the Kakanmath Temple retains its former grandeur and is proclaimed one of the finest examples of ancient Indian art. Visitors must climb stairs to see the Shivalinga and will see pillars on both sides before entering the temple. Many of the statues of Hindu deities within the temple are broken, believed to have been damaged during wars and invasions, and the remains of other, smaller shrines can be found to the right of the temple, including a Shivaling.
