National Home Maker’s Day: Celebrating all the unsung heroes of our lives

On November 3rd of every year, we celebrate National Homemaker’s or Housewife’s Day to honor the people who run our households. Of course, they deserve much more appreciation and respect for what they do. But celebrating them at least a day in the whole year, for making our lives easy, comfortable and happy, is also a good way to start with.

Although, the original creator of this day is not known. People believe that it must have been started by a housewife who was done being unrewarded and underappreciated for all the things she does.

Homemaker’s Day might not be as popular as the other days that we celebrate, but it has its own significance. It acknowledges the efforts of millions of stay-at-home mothers and wives who manage it all so that we can have it easy. They do everything ‘behind the scenes’ so that our ‘on-screen’ looks good.

Homemaking is literally one of the most tedious jobs to do. Owing to its name, a homemaker makes a ‘house with four walls’ into a ‘home’ with their constant labor. It is a 24/7 job which is seldom even regarded as a ‘job.’ It is in fact, mostly looked at as an easy way out or a comfortable choice whereas, in reality, it is anything but easy.

Homemakers have a million responsibilities to fulfill just so that everything stays in place for everyone else. Their to-do lists are never-ending, and they rarely have time for themselves. Additionally, they do all this for a non-salaried role with no leaves, promotions, or bonuses!

Times are changing today, but traditionally, homemakers were mostly women. This is why the day is referred to as ‘National Housewife’s Day. However, in the present era, using the term ‘homemaker’ is more appropriate because it is more gender inclusive. Today, it can be used to refer to both a man and a woman, as gender roles are not so stringent anymore. Hence, Homemaker now means anyone who chooses to stay home and takes care of it.

But no matter the gender, homemakers have always been taken for granted. Very few people understand that to play this one role, they have to play ten other roles. They always have to be ‘all-rounders’ managing everything at once. And that it is a very difficult choice to make.

Dedicating only a day to celebrate all their sacrifices and hard work might not be enough, but we should try our best to make it special for them. After all, they work day and night to make every single day not just bearable but also lovable for us.

Along with this, we should also take a pledge of thanking them every day. It is high time that we start respecting a homemaker and their job as much as we respect all other professionals and their professions. Because as a matter of the fact, without the contributions of homemakers, we would not be able to do anything else.

If you’re someone who is a homemaker, a big salute to you. And if you’re someone who is blessed with a homemaker making it a ‘happy home’ for you, you are really lucky!! So, go give them a big hug and thank them for their endless dedication and patience.
