Saints of India: Avvaiyar
Saints of India: Avvaiyar was a great poetess and an intrinsic part of Tamil literature of the Sangam period.
Avvaiyar was a great poetess and an intrinsic part of Tamil literature of the Sangam period.
Legend goes that Avvaiyar, after having composed poems for many years, finally decided to retire while she was resting under the Jambu tree.
At that moment, a disguised Murugan met her there and they had a witty and wise conversation which continued for a while.
At the end of their conversation, the god Murugan threw his disguise away and told her that there were still many things left for Avvaiyar to learn and do.
And thus, Avvaiyar is believed to have undertaken a new set of literary works, for children. These works became extremely famous, and even today are taught to children in Tamil Nadu!
