Shani Tel Abhishek: A cure from all Shani Dosh
Shani is a very powerful planet in astronomy and, when personified, is a very powerful God. If, on the one hand, he can bless people to battle their hardships and troubles, on the other hand, he can punish people sternly for their mistakes and sins. And what if someone suffers from this destroying wrath of Shani Dev? Well, there is a way to seek his forgiveness in the form of puja, the Shani tel Abhishek.
The beautiful planet with a ring you know about is none other than Shani or Saturn. But, do you know that in mythology and astrology, Shani is a compelling and essential character? It is said to be the ruling planet. However, this powerful planet is very slow in its movement and takes nearly two and a half years to change the zodiac sign. This is why the effect of Shani stays for a long time.
Also, in our mythology, there is a fascinating piece of the story about Shani, which portrays Shani as a boastful God who was once immensely proud of his power and potential. One day, he came near Hanuman, who was absorbed in his devotion to Rama. Shani could not resist the fact that, despite being a mighty God, Hanuman was completely committed to Rama in front of him. He interrupted Hanuman and made all possible attempts to prove his presence and greatness. But Hanuman remained unmoved by his actions and refused to recognise him. In return, he pleaded with him to return to his place and allow him to meditate for his Prabhu, Rama.
However, Shani was enraged by his ignorance and decided to punish him for his insolence. He not only insulted Hanuman but also Lord Rama. Being the greatest devotee of Rama, Hanuman could not resist his insult and pushed Shani away with all his force. Shani was severely injured and realised his mistake at once.
He eventually made his way back to Hanuman and sought forgiveness. On the other hand, Hanuman agreed to help him in return for a promise. According to this, Shani would never put his Bakra Drusti (curved vision) and painful sufferings on the ones who would pray to Hanuman.
Lord Shani is also known as Karamphaldata (judge of all deeds) or the God of justice. A person must please him with his devotion and deeds. It is said that oil is one of the things Shani loves the most. And, if ever someone becomes a victim of Shani dosh, then Shani Tel Abhishek is one of the best ways to satisfy him. Offering different oils to Shani Dev on Saturdays and Tuesdays is the way to remove the problems and vessel all his blessings.
Another version of the Shani-Hanuman Katha in our mythology also explains why Shani is so fond of oil. The story is set in the Ramayana when Ravana wins over the Tri-Loka and almost becomes immortal. As a result, he won the nine planets too. When his son Meghnath was born, he cleverly placed all the planets in his 11th house to make him invincible.
Everyone was already afraid of Ravana's terror, and now Meghnath's invincibility had put them in great trouble. This was the time when Shani came to their rescue and stretched his leg to the 12th house of Meghnath. Ravana, being a great scholar and astrologer, got to know about Shani's move, which would result in the death of Meghnath. Hence, he imprisoned Shani in a dark cell so that no one would ever see him again.
During this time, Hanuman came to Lanka in search of Mata Sita. Suddenly, his eyes went on helpless Shani, and he rushed to free him from the bondage. But, due to the strict security in the palace of Ravana and a lack of time, Hanuman threw Shani far away from Lanka to safe land.
However, Shani could not reach a safe place and got severely injured. When Hanuman knew about the incident, he immediately went to Shani for help. He applied mustard oil to Shani’s wound to reduce his pain. Shani was much relieved and comfortable after using it, and from that day on, mustard oil became his favourite.
Shani ensured that anyone who would offer him oil would open an eternal way for his blessings. He also told Hanuman that he would never harm anyone who would be his devotee.
The Shani Tel Abhisekh is performed on the ninth day of Shukla Paksha (Moon waxing period) of the Jyestha (May-June) month. This is the day of Shani, or Shanivara (Saturday). Shani is glorified in the Shani Mantras. The idol is decorated with flowers and lit up with diyas. Finally, his favourite oil is poured on the icon to obtain the blessing of Shani.
The ritual can also be observed on Shani Amavasya, Shani Jayanti, Shani Trayodashi, or even on Saturdays. As these days are related to Shani, they are considered quite auspicious for the occasion. One can visit the nearby Shani temple to offer his prayers and seek his blessings. However, never forget to keep chanting the Shani Mantra. Black sesame seeds and black urad can also be provided with the oil as Shani is always fascinated with black things.
Shani Tel Abhishek removes all the hindrances and nullifies the harsh effects of Shani Dosh. Hence, this puja has been given a significant place by Hindus.
At last, we hope that Lord Shani bestows his most favoured blessing on everyone
