Srirangapatna is a town and one of the seven taluks in the Mandya district of the state of Karnataka, South India. It is most renowned for being the capital of Tipu Sultan, the valiant "Tiger of Mysore." The town derives its name from the Ranganthaswamy Temple, consecrated around 984 CE, and it holds immense religious, cultural, and historical significance.

Srirangapatna is named after the illustrious Ranganathaswamy Temple, which dominates the town, making it one of the most important Vaishnavite centres of pilgrimage in South India. The temple was originally built by the rulers of the Ganga dynasty in the 9th century and later underwent architectural renovations in the Hoysala and Vijayanagara styles, creating a beautiful medley of architectural influences.

Srirangapatna is an absolute tourist destination, with awe-inspiring temples and enchanting natural spots, making it a majestic place to visit.

According to tradition, all the islands formed in the Kaveri River are dedicated to Sri Ranganathaswamy, leading to the construction of sumptuous and spectacular temples since ancient times. Srirangapatna boasts several other temples, including the Lakshminarasimha Swamy Temple, Jyothi Mahaswara Temple, Bidhcotta Ganesha Temple, Panduranga Swamy Temple, the Sathyanarayana Swamy Temple, the Anjunaya Swamy Temple, and many more.

The Srirangapatna Fort stands on the western side of the island, encompassed by double walls. The point where the British breached the walls, leaving them astonished by the structure, is marked by an obelisk. Additionally, Colonel Bailey’s Dungeon served as the place where Tipu Sultan imprisoned all the British officers.

Outside the eastern wall of the fortress lies Daria Daulat Bagh, a beautiful garden surrounding Tipu Sultan's summer palace. This garden houses personal belongings and memorials connected with the two rulers, beautifully displayed in a small museum. The Srirangapatna Fort is also combined with the Jumma Masjid, constructed by Tipu Sultan. Nearby, Gumbaz is a magnificent tomb containing the mortal remains of Hyder Ali, his wife, and Tipu Sultan. The Ranganittu Bird Sanctuary is another popular destination visited by tourists, enchanting birds from as far away as Siberia.

In the past, the island capital of Hyder Ali and his son Tipu Sultan was surrounded by the Kaveri River, where they constructed magnificent island houses showcasing remarkable architecture. Tipu Sultan, who fought his last battle against the British, Kodavas, and Malabar Rajas, met his fate here in 1799. The memorial now marks the spot of his demise, drawing people from far and wide on a pilgrimage to this sacred shrine.

Adjacent to a dam, Brindavan Gardens is a famous attraction known for its well-laid-out gardens with musical fountains, cascading in various shapes and multicoloured lights, creating a fairytale-like ambience, especially at night. Around 40 km from Mandya are the Sivasamudram Falls, the second-largest waterfall in India, offering a mesmerising view. These falls provide hydroelectric power to Bangalore and Mysore. Two popular places of pilgrimage in the vicinity are the Nimishamba Temple, dedicated to Goddess Parvati, and the Karighatta Temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu.
