The continuously successful playback singer
Shreya Ghoshal, known for her hits in movies from Devdas onwards, all the way to the present day, was born today in 1984. She has been consistently rated to be one of the best female singers in India.
Songs are to be remembered, and so perhaps are the singers. One such singer was born on the 12th of March, 1984. Her name is Shreya Ghoshal, and one can be sure that if they have lived near any Hindi-speaking regions in the past 10-15 years, they have heard her voice, lest they are living under a rock.
While she was a Bengali, her father kept transferring due to his work, and hence she grew up in Rajasthan. Her music career started in 1998, as an amateur singer, in Marathi and Bengali. However, she also enrolled in the Children’s Episode of the Indian musical talent hunt series, Sa Re Ga Ma.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali observed the performance, and immediately offered her a role - she would voice-act Paro in the upcoming movie Devdas, while it would be portrayed by Aishwarya Rai. Ghoshal also sang 5 songs in that film, with established singers like Udit Narayan, KK, Kavita Krishnamurthy and others.
Only 16 years of age, she would go on to record Bairi Piya in Devdas, which became an instant hit in its time. Furthermore, she won and co-shared an award with Krishnamurthy for Dola Re from the same movie. Interestingly, she recorded the entire Bairi Piya during a practice session, as the music directors decided to take the rehearsal version of the song as the final one, as it was flawless.
From then on, began her extremely industrious music career. She would give her voice to songs long remembered in Bollywood, ranging from Jadu Hai Nasha Hai, Aye Meri Zindagi. Chann Chann, Pyar Bhara Geet, to award-winning or nominated songs like - Piyu Bole, Agar Tum Mil Jao, Dheere Jalna.
Her discography is perhaps too long to record in a single go, and if one adds to that her appearances as a judge in TV shows and appearances in music videos, it suffices to say that her career is continuing to grow.
