Goddess Meenakshi is believed to be an incarnation of Goddess Parvati and was supposedly born with three breasts. She was the blessing of Lord Shiva to King Malayadwaja Pandya and his wife Kanchanamali, who performed a Yajana, requesting a son.

When this triple-breasted girl appeared, a divine voice assured the couple that the third breast would disappear the moment she meets her future husband. When Meenakshi tried to capture Kailash, Lord Sundareswarar, the incarnation of Lord Shiva appeared in front of her. Her third bread vanished immediately, stating that Lord Sundareswarar was indeed her future husband.

Lord Shiva requested Lord Meenakshi to return to Madurai with an oath that he would marry her. He returned as Lord Sundareswarar in Madurai to marry Meenakshi, who was supposedly Lord Vishnu’s sister. A visit to this temple will show that this particular scene is depicted in the murals.

Their wedding happened in Madurai in the presence of all the gods and goddesses. After marriage, Lord Sundareswarar and Lord Meenakshi ruled over Madurai before returning to Kailasam. The wedding is celebrated as Chithirai Thiruvizha, AKA Meenakshi Tirukalyanam festival, with great pomp even today. It’s an annual festival held every April that attracts millions of devotees from across the world and continues to showcase the mystical appeal of the temple, exuding powerful vibes straight from the heavens.
