Winterline

A scientific phenomenon that transforms the horizon into a literal page out of a fantasy novel. This phenomenon is visible in the Swiss alps, as well as our own Mussoorie. The Winterline carnival named after this phenomenon is the go-to destination for the winter.

Mussoorie is called India's own Switzerland, because of snow-capped mountains in the winter, the various species of wildlife, the slow-paced lifestyle, and the wonderous Winterline.

From certain mountainous parts of the world, the false horizon known as the winterline or winter line is visible at dusk. Although its cause is unknown, it has been suggested that experts believe it is caused by the refraction of light from dust, moisture, and smog rising from the plains below meeting the cooler air in the mountains, and preventing a clear line between the two. In October and February, the Mussoorie Winterline Carnival pays homage to this phenomenon, which is visible from many places throughout the Himalayas. Apart from Mussoorie, winterline is also visible in certain parts of the Swiss Alps.

The sight of the Winterline is one to behold, it looks like a bridge suspended at the horizon, and many folk tales surrounding this phenomenon are popular in the state. One such tale is that in the ancient period, seven sisters trekked a mountain and reached the peak, when they were heading back to their village a sudden landslide claimed their lives. Lord Krishna saw this and wished to help them but he couldn't bring them back to life as it was against the laws of nature. So he transformed them into Forest Spirits who guard the forests and help the lost travelers. It is believed that the Winterline is a bridge that they cross every year to travel from Earth to Heaven.

Whether this story is true or just a fable is not confirmed, but every year people from around the world travel to witness this natural phenomenon and enjoy the Winterline Carnival. The best time to visit is between December and February, the peak rush is seen during Christmas and New Year. You can travel by bus, train, or flight to Dehradun, from here you can either get a bus or cab that will take you to the Mussoorie Bus Station. The best spot to witness Winterline is from the famous Mall Road, where you can get all types of tasty snacks and refreshments. Woolens and traditional artifacts , games, and rides, and you can either walk or rent a bicycle or traditional rickshaw for the complete experience.

Enjoy a warm cup of Masala Chai or hot corn sprinkled with lemon and pepper while you gaze at this beautiful sight of nature and escape reality and dive into the magical world of fantasy. If you are lucky, while you are there you may meet the most loved author of India, Ruskin Bond at the Cambridge Book Depot.
