Crashed on 14th Feb 1990

Before boarding an aircraft, somewhere down the line, everyone experiences a lingering fear of the flight crashing. The fear is irrational but isn't entirely misplaced- there are too many variables and too many eventualities. One way or another, we calm the cynic inside us down. Sometimes, however, our worst fears come true. Flight 605 was one such tragedy.

It departed from then Bombay at 11:58 AM, after a delay that lasted for about an hour. The same model was used for two (Airbus A320) other flights on the same day, Flight 669 and 670. The journey went without any fuss. However, just as it was attempting to land, the pilots made an error in judgment- they flew below the glideslope. The landing gear came in contact with the Karnataka Golf Club's grounds, which was somewhere around 2800 ft away from the airport.

Passengers on the aircraft and some crew members mistook it for the runway as the sensations felt were similar to when a plane lands normally. They couldn't have predicted what came next. The plane bounced on impact and hit the ground another time, which caused many seatbelts to fail. People were thrown from their seats onto the aircraft floor.

Then, the engines and the landing gear got detached upon contact with an embankment, post which it flew over a road and crashed just near the airport. Several people managed to escape the post-impact burning wreckage from an opening. Whatever was left of the cabin crew began helping the passengers to escape. 88 people died on the spot, and 4 later succumbed to injuries they had sustained. All the remaining 54 people who survived had suffered injuries.

The tragic incident became the centre of controversy after the India Commercial Pilot Association claimed that the pilots weren't responsible for the crash, contrary to the findings of the Indian Investigative Team and Airbus Industries. It was asserted that the pilots had their hands tied because the flight design itself was faulty. Another A320 model crashed two years later, which led to improvements in the design of the plane.

Whatever the reason might've been, it remains one of India's worst aircraft tragedies to this day.

When I'm not blabbering on ad nauseam about international relations, I can be found wasting time on Twitter crying about Manchester City's cursed luck in the Champions League. As much as I like to pretend I'm an Indie dudebro, I do not mind singing the occasional Taylor Swift song at the top of my lungs.
