Vethathiri Maharishi, known for his theories on world peace and the formation of the world, and his spiritual philosophic writings, passed away today in 2006.

Born in 1911, Vethathiri Maharishi would come to become one of the most famous spiritual speakers and world peace activists in India. He would spend his youth managing a textile concern which rapidly grew to 2000 workers, and then he noted something being amiss. He would start meditating and introspection regularly in his 30s, and claimed that he had been enlightened by 35. Furthermore, Maharishi closed all commercial ventures by 50 and started devoting himself completely to spiritual advice. In his works, he strove to find answers to questions like, “What is God? What is Life, and Why is there poverty in this World?” These three questions were to become his driving fuel into spirituality and philosophy. He was driven to practice indigenous medicine - Ayurveda and Siddha and became a practitioner of Homeopathy as well.
Remaining a householder till late in his life, he would also write thousands of philosophical poems, books about his divine ‘revelations’, and his philosophy - that of pure Advaita, belief in the Supreme Being present inside every human. Completely non-dogmatic and non-sectarian in his views, Maharishi would write in Tamil and English languages.
He would develop a ‘science of living’ where humans must live in harmony with the law of nature, connecting with both their spirituality and their material well being.
Maharishi would point out that the Universe had two aspects - force/gravity, containing the source of all forces, and consciousness, meaning the order of function in everything. Developing a theory of Universal Magnetism, he founded the World Community Service centre, aiming for world peace via making peace inside the individual.
From the 1970s to the 1990s, he would work hard for world peace - giving a 14 point justice plan as well. Vethathiri Maharishi would pass away on the 28th of March, 2006, and his legacy would be continued by the organisations set up under him.
