A name worth to be remembered, a person whose story is worth to be told, Dr Arvind Lal revolutionized the field of health infrastructure with his leading laboratory Dr Lal PathLabs.
Born on 22nd August 1949
It’s a tense situation at home. Sukanya and her family are desperately waiting the results of their covid test. Outside, the pandemic has been raging like a wild fire. While the whole family is seated in their living room, the calling bell rings all of a sudden. “It must be the reports of the covid tests”, says Sukanya. As one of them opens the door and brings back the enveloped results, the family gets all the more tense. Sukanya takes out the reports and on it, there is printed ‘Dr. Lal Pathlabs’ in blue cursive font upon a yellow background. The reports have come negative and the family seems to feel joyous.
Serving millions of customers, Dr Lal Pathlabs has become a renowned and trusted option to go for when one has to do a medical report. The foremost name and laboratory for doing a blood report, Dr Lal Pathlabs has earned the trust and conviction of thousands of patients across the country. So, where did the journey of the leading state of the art laboratory begin? Who is the person behind the operation of hundreds of these laboratories and how did it reach the pinnacle of its success within a few years?
The story of Dr Lal PathLabs began in 1949 when a junior doctor in the British Indian Army, Dr S.K. Lal set up the first laboratory at the heart of India, Delhi. The very year, his son Arvind Lal was born on the 22nd of August in 1949. Born in Pune, he too followed his father’s footsteps and went to pursue medicine from Pune’s Armed Forces Medical College. A successful medical professional, Dr Lal took up the position of lecturer at the same college. Unsurprisingly, his subject was pathology given the fact that his father had already set up Dr Lal PathLabs. Dr Arvind too went back to his family business around 1977 and took up the reigns from his predecessor. Next, there began a story of hard work, innovation and success that saw the exponential growth of the laboratory as it branched out in the nooks and corners of India.
As Dr Arvind Lal took up the charge, he also brought forth new technologies that were hitherto unknown and unpractised within India. Introducing Information and Communications Technology and affiliating itself to the College of American Pathologists, Dr Arvind Lal made sure of Dr Lal PathLabs to remain at the top of its game.
The medical world saw another big step when Dr Lal decided to launch the first Public Private Partnership with the Government of Tripura and did the same with the Gujarat Government, so as to make the government medical associations more efficient and resourceful.
For his colossal contributions to his field, the World Health Organisation had also awarded him a special honour. The country itself took notice of him when the Delhi Government honoured him with the Delhi Rattan Award in 2005 and the India Government doing the same with the Padma Shri some 4 years later.
Dr Lal has also achieved another first with him being made the honorary Brigadier in the Indian Army, the first-ever for a civilian doctor.
A long-spanning career, his hard work and dedication has proved to be a constant and only bettered the health infrastructure of India. Even when 2020 saw a deadly pandemic spreading across the lengths and breadths of the country, Dr Lal PathLabs worked day and night to carry on with the thousands of tests. The doctors are the treasures of this country and Dr Arvind Lal is a rare jewel under whose guidance Dr Lal PathLabs has provided for thousands of patients. Today, as he turns 72 years old, the nation salutes him for his relentless work and commitment in developing the health infrastructure of India.
