The youngest son of Raj Kapoor and the sibling of Rishi Kapoor and Randhir Kapoor, Rajiv Kapoor though couldn't achieve as much success as his brothers or other Kapoor members. Living his entire life away from the limelight of stardom, his private life was seldom a topic of discussion for the paparazzi. Truly talented in every possible way, Rishi describes him in the following way:
"I worry a lot about Chimpu and feel sad that he has never been able to realize his true potential. He is the most talented of us and has an uncanny ear for music. He plays the piano superbly without ever learning it."
Rajiv made his first debut in Ek Jaan Hain Hum in 1983. He also played the leading role in his father's last directorial venture Ram Teri Ganga Maili in 1985. Apart from these, he also played the lead roles in several notable films like Aasmaan, Lover Boy, Zabardast, and Hum Toh Chale Pardes.
After his last appearance in the film Zimmedaaar, Kapoor turned to producing and directing films. He had also played a role in a film named Aag Ka Darya with actors like Dilip Kumar and Rekha. Though it was shot and completed in 1990, it was never released.
After his father died, Rajiv took to producing and his first directorial debut was Henna. Further in 1996, he made his directorial debut in a commercially successful film Prem Granth. In the year 1999, he was also a part of the producer team of the film Aa Ab Laut Chalen. However, this was his last film as he became inactive in film producing or directing.
In the year 2001, Rajiv married Aarti Sabharwal. However, according to some sources, they led an unhappy married life and Rajiv spent most of his time alone. The couple was divorced in 2003. Some of his caretakers also informed that he resorted to uncontrollable drinking.
It was in 2021 that Rajiv died due to a heart attack. He was staying at his brother, Randhir's house and was rushed to Inlaks Hospital. But by the time he reached the hospital, the doctors declared him dead.
