Sambal: Drums of India
There are not many types of drums in India, however, there are many kinds of drums in India. From the elder to even a toddler, people in India can create a drum out of everywhere and anywhere. All they need is just for their hands to start thumping a platform, be it any. However, there are only limited types of drums. One of them is known as Sambal.

Story of Sambal

Sambal is a traditional drum that is also a membranophone. It’s considered a folk instrument which is mostly seen and is played during the Gondhal pujas and weddings. These usually happen in the state of Maharashtra.

The discovery of this instrument was not made in a competition or perhaps a concert, but at a Maharashtrian wedding. The night of the wedding has a ritual of a ceremony to happen which is known as Gondhal. That is the time of the wedding that the instrument of Sambal is played.

A sambal is an instrument that has two drums conjoined from one side. They both differ in pitch and size. One of the drums is higher in pitch than the other. The drums on the instrument have skinheads that are there on the top. It’s played not by hand like the normal drum but with two sticks. These sticks are shaped differently as well. One of the sticks has a circular tip.

Sambal is tied around a person's waist and played with the sticks. Another way to play the instrument is by placing it on the floor and playing it by sitting down on the ground. As much melody this instrument provides as and when it’s played alone, it’s also a great combination when it’s played with other instruments such as the Shehnai.

As majorly as the instrument is played in Maharashtrian weddings, it’s also preferred to be played in social events. Navratri is one such event where the Sambal players are invited to different places for the whole of the nine days of the festival for playing the instrument.

Just as brilliant as a drum is and sound, a Sambal is a similarly pleasing and soothing instrument. Not just for weddings or festivals but even if it’s played without a reason, it will perform its duties to the best level.

I’m a person who just doesn’t get bored or panic or take stress for that matter. It’s all in the mind, and for me, it’s not there. Depression doesn’t exist for me and I don’t believe in panic attacks. It’s all in the mind and I’m just kidding.
