Kindness today has become a mere publicity stunt. The one which should be very basic nature of a human personality is now especially prayed or wished for. Most of the advertisements we come across promote the expected minimal kindness, which we forget still exists in an ignored corner of our hearts. We think twice before donating a penny to the poor or buying a rose from a little girl wearing a shabby frock. Our generous contributions are propelled usually by any occasion of our lives- be it a birthday or a festivity. It’s only to make ourselves feel better, better about doing something remarkable for the society. But the question is, ARE WE? Since the next thing we do, is flooding our social media handles with proofs that we did something significant. We don’t feel the satisfaction unless we are praised for it. Is that really what the sensation of kindness feels like? Or, is it that all these acts of kindness are driven by the spotlight, not the smiles of the underprivileged?

World Kindness Day is crafted as the day to observe the noble deeds of the people. November 13 is highlighted to put up the flags of harmony and empathy for every being in this world. The day was first suggested by the World Kindness Movement. Under the Swiss law, the organization was first registered as a NGO in 2019. The roots of its history go back to a convention of 1997 in Tokyo. The convention was filled with delegates from many associations of the United States, United Kingdoms, Australia and Thailand.

> The oath of ‘joining together to build a kinder and more compassionate world’ was taken on 1998, the inaugural year of World Kindness Day. The aim of the day was highlighted as ‘to accentuate good deeds in the community focusing on positive power and the common thread of kindness which binds us’.

Kindness isn’t limited to serving the poor. It’s every good deed that counts. We often forget to consciously wish someone well in his/her achievements, or become rude only for our own selfish reason. We forget to look back and apologize if necessary. World Kindness Day is a plea to be considerate towards our mothers, fathers, guardians and teachers, and everyone around us, for all their influences in our life and growth.

There shouldn’t be conscious acts of kindness, solely for the media attention. The random acts of kindness- a more natural form- is what this day propagates. Thanking your mother for the food she cooks, sending motivational text messages to your friends/colleagues, being patient during the traffic haul and while getting boiled in the queue, buying a rose from that little girl- these are the natural acts of kindness which we should embed in our invisible routine, just like waking up or brushing our teeth.

At present, 28 countries are giving a boost to this day. However, it’s still an unofficial day. The Movement dreams of getting an official recognition in the United Nations. One is requested to enlist at least 3 kind acts he/she has done in the day in order to celebrate.
