Jay Om Prakash is a name seldom heard outside Bollywood, but his films have been watched by many, if not most, cinema-going Indians. Born on the 24th of January, 1926, he was brought up in Sialkot and Lahore, where his father taught in a school. He acquired a taste for mushairas and Urdu books, and it was reflected later in his life as he often supervised and suggested his music directors on particular music to be played in films.

Om Prakash moved to Mumbai in the wake of the Partition of India, and would set up a film studio over time - this was from his experience of managing a film distribution studio back in Lahore. His production studio, Filmyug, relived many films - Aas ka Panchi being the first. This became an instant hit, and he continued with this venture for 30+ years.

In that time, he made Ayee Milan ki Bela, Aaye Din Bahar ke, Aya Sawan Jhoom Ke, Aakhir Kyun, Aankhon Aankhon Mei - and if one notices a pattern here, almost all of his movies started with an ‘A’ or ‘Aa’, for reasons unknown, but it did mark him as a specific separate brand.

Only two movies stood separate from this trend - Bhagwan Dada, and Raja Rani.

He made his directorial debut with Aap Ki Kasam. The previous movies had been produced by him, but he now intended to step into the directing business. Here, he made a masterpiece starring Rajesh Khanna and Mumtaz - and was well remembered for songs like Jai Jai Shiv Shankar, Karwaten Badalte Rahen, Zindagi ke Safar, etc.

He also directed several Punjabi language films - and made them all starting with an a or aa sound as well. He was also the President of the Film Federation of India late in his life, and a great patron of welfare funds for artists. He passed away in 2019.
